Walgett is a town in northern NSW, Australia, it is the junction of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers and the Kamilaroi and Castlereagh Highways. It was inhabited by the Gamilaroi (also spelt Kamilaroi) Nation of Indigenous peoples before white settlement.

Tourism

Walgett is a major highway junction for touring routes to the north Lightning Ridge, to the East Burren Junction and Wee Waa to the South Coonamble to the west Brewarrina.

Agriculture

The Walgett District is a producer of a variety of agricultural commodities including cotton, wheat, beef cattle and sheep and pulse crops.

History

Walgett is rich in history it was gazetted in 1859 and the courthouse built in 1865 it was a port for paddle steamers in 1861 to 1870.  It was proclaimed 20 March 1885 and surveyed.

Burren Junction Public School Makes a Splash at State Championships

Burren Junction Public School has celebrated an outstanding achievement at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) State Swimming Championships, returning home with a gold medal and the prestigious Peter Dobson Relay Team Trophy.

Competing against schools from across New South Wales at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, the Burren Junction relay team of Angus Harris, John McMahon, Agatha Burke and Tabitha Shearer delivered a remarkable performance in the 4 x 50 metre freestyle relay.

The Peter Dobson Relay Team Trophy is a highly regarded award, specifically recognising small schools with enrolments between 25 and 54 students. Named in honour of long-serving NSWPSSA swimming convener Peter Dobson, the event highlights the strength, determination and talent of regional and rural students competing on the state stage.

For a small school like Burren Junction, this victory is particularly significant. Competing against similar-sized schools from across the state, the team demonstrated not only skill and speed in the water, but also teamwork, dedication and school spirit.

Their gold medal-winning performance is a proud moment for the entire community, showcasing what can be achieved through commitment and opportunity, regardless of school size or location.

The achievement adds to Burren Junction Public School’s strong tradition of participation and success in school sport, and serves as an inspiration to younger students looking to follow in their footsteps.

Congratulations to Angus, John, Agatha and Tabitha on an exceptional result and a well-deserved place in the school’s sporting history.
